Dr Richard Westerman
Psychologist
| CHILDREN | ADOLESCENTS | ADULTS
Richard studied and trained in the United Kingdom, earning undergraduate, master’s, and doctorate degrees in Psychology. Before moving to Australia, Richard worked as an Educational and Child Psychologist, supporting children, adolescents, and young adults in educational and home settings. This experience helped him develop expertise in assessing and treating neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism spectrum condition (ASC) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD); behavioural disorders including oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), conduct disorder, and antisocial behaviour; mood disorders such as depression and bipolar disorder; and anxiety disorders including generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), separation anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and specific phobias.
While Richard primarily worked with young people in the UK within a systemic family therapy (SFT) framework, his focus in Australia has expanded to include adults, children, and families. He is passionate about positive psychology and integrates approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT), and eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) to support individuals dealing with anxiety, attachment difficulties, addiction, depression, complex trauma, PTSD, phobias, self-harm, relationship challenges, grief, and loss.
During his time off Richard enjoys tending to a BBQ on the beach with the warmth of the sun on his back whilst listening to the soundtrack of the ocean.
